Instructional design in online learning

My aim is to create an environment that is engaging, centered on students, and supportive. By starting with a student-focused approach and intentionally integrating all essential elements of effective learning into a meaningful learning environment, I can assist my students in learning how to learn and in becoming the individuals I aspire for them to be. My focus will be on new activity directors in a district at the high school level. To effectively equip my students with the tools needed to tackle authentic learning challenges, students will navigate through digital and in-person lesson components. These lessons will direct their understanding and thought processes about the subject matter as they endeavor to address real-world issues. This approach aims to cultivate a passion for learning and ensure that every student is able to realize and reach their full potential.

  • What is your subject, level of instruction, and intended audience?

    • -New Activity Directors in a high school environment

  • What are the key institutional documents (i.e. syllabus, outline, accreditation standards, etc.) that will influence your design process?

    • -I will be using an outline.

  • Are you using competency-based education (CBE) or outcome-based education (OBE)? Why?

    • -I will be using both CBE and OBE in my blended learning classroom. I plan to implement outcome-based education to ensure my students master specific objectives, which will eventually empower them to develop and execute their own ideas. We'll begin with small steps and gradually progress until they can successfully organize events of any size. Additionally, I'll integrate competency-based education to meet each student where they are. My focus is on cultivating long-term skills that will enable them to be successful, fully engaged, and evolve into critical thinkers.

  • What design approach have you chosen? Why?

    • -I plan to employ a blend of face-to-face teacher-led instruction and online resources, such as videos and articles. This method provides the flexibility needed to accommodate various learning styles and needs. By adopting a student-centered approach, I aim to intentionally craft a meaningful learning environment that not only facilitates the acquisition of knowledge but also fosters personal growth and development. My focus will be on establishing clear learning objectives, curating relevant content, orchestrating engaging activities, and delivering prompt feedback through technology, all designed to enable students to cultivate metacognitive abilities and a growth mindset.

  • How will you balance assessment Or/For/As learning?

    • -Ensuring that outcomes, activities, and assessments are in harmony is vital for crafting a unified learning experience for my students. Every lesson is crafted with specific objectives at the forefront, and activities are selected to directly bolster these aims. Assessments are diverse and suitable for the age group, encompassing both casual observations and conversations in person and online, which enables me to measure each student's advancement and tailor instruction accordingly. I intend to employ continuous feedback and reflection. This approach will assist my students in refining their work and attaining greater depths of critical thinking.

  • Are you moving your learners into deeper learning?

    • -Students will engage in self-reflection by using a provided self-assessment rubric to justify their chosen grade. This will help them understand where they are and what areas need to be refined, and all ensure they are successful. Additionally, feedforward opportunities will be integrated into projects that revolve around real world scenarios. I will work with the students on a few activities and give them ample time to ask questions and have a hands-on approach with guidance along the way. This will help them produce work that exhibits a thorough understanding of the content.

  • Who controls the learning?

    • -My course will blend teacher-led and student-paced learning, fostering the implementation of solid knowledge and strategies. This approach allows students time for self-exploration, promoting deeper engagement and ensuring a high-quality learning experience. Transforming the teacher's role into a facilitator for student-led learning is crucial for empowering students by providing them with Choice, Ownership, Voice, and Authentic learning experiences (COVA).

  • BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal)- Over the course of nine weeks, students will acquire skills centered on planning and executing activities within a high school environment. They will begin with modest projects and gradually progress to independently planning and conducting their own activities.
