Do our students really own their ePortfolio?

To really embrace COVA, Choice, Ownership, Voice by creating an Authentic learning environment that is flexible and engaging for the students. This type of learning is student centered where the students are responsible and take ownership over their own learning.

CSLE is also a way to give our students more flexibility and an opportunity to form meaningful connections with their peers to create an environment to increase student involvement and creativity.

I have to ask myself even if our students are building and creating their own ePortfolio do they truly have complete ownership and voice? I say this because in the education system there are so many sites that are restricted, and I understand why things are this way. We have to protect them from ads and prevent them from looking things up that are inappropriate. But, if we have to censor and monitor all that they do, do they truly have voice and ownership over their ePortfolio? I say that it gives them a portion of it but not complete control. If the school purchases the student's domain, it protects their identity and gives them ownership, but it still doesn't give them complete control because the school is still blocking sites that they could possibly use for information and growing their knowledge in a subject. In turn we think we are giving our students ownership, but we aren't really doing that unless they have free rein. If we are telling them what they have to have on it or what they have to do assignment wise, then they truly don't own their ePortfolio. Which in turn is preventing those meaningful connections and authentic learning. What do you think?
