Why or why not to use ePortfolios

To me this shouldn’t even be a question that needs to be asked. I haven’t been in the MED program at Lamar University very long, but I can already see the significant benefits to having an ePortfolio. These benefits can impact so many lives including our students.

Like I have said before there is so much variety and personality that shines through when you open up someone's ePortfolio. It showcases their organizational skills, their passion and artistic abilities through the wide variety of platforms, layouts, and color schemes they chose. It lets you have a first-hand seat at where that learner started in their learning journey and how they have grown and progressed in their work. Embracing their true voice and taking ownership in their ePortfolio. When starting your ePortfolio process it can seem a little overwhelming in the beginning, but it allows you to have full autonomy over the layout and all of the content and blogs you chose to write and display on your pages.

With my ePortfolio I will be able to showcase my growth as a professional and be able to self-reflect upon my work. I can use it to share my ideas and passions with coworkers and administration. While also showcasing my commitment to continued lifelong learning. This will help me build connections and develop a more authentic learning process. With these connections I make through my journey I can take feedback and comments or suggestions and share my ideas with others. Sharing these ideas can help open up new doors and endless possibilities.

For my students they can use their ePortfolios to embrace COVA. Choice, Ownership, and Voice through Authentic Learning Opportunities. It gives them in most cases the first time to take something and make it their own. Having complete control of every aspect of their ePortfolio and they will have something to be proud of. This will make their learning experience more meaningful and engaging which will encourage more active participation on their end. The students will be able to reflect back on previous work and self-assess their learning and growth. Each student will be able to view others' ePortfolio and leave comments or give feedback, while also building communication and social skills and strengthening their bond with each other.
